A number of Bishop Lynch High School Girl Scouts from Troops 1562, 2432 and 1433 have been working extremely hard on their Gold Award projects. Each week, we will cast the spotlight on one of these stellar young ladies and recognize them for their incredible effort by letting them tell their story.
“Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is the top pediatric orthopedic facility in the state of Texas with more than 40,000 patients visiting the facility each year.
‘Blankets that Benefit’ is a project I developed for the patients of the hospital. Many of these children travel long distances to the hospital and have long stays. They experience a lot of fear and uncertainty. ‘Blankets that Benefit’ provides a child with a blanket to help them feel warm and safe during their stay, which they get to keep the blanket when they go home.
My project had multiple parts. Volunteers helped me collect blankets at drives at two churches – St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and Pleasant Grove Christian Church. Friends, family and volunteers also got together and made many blankets.
In the initial phase, we were able to make/collect 130 blankets. A sewing group from West Plano Presbyterian Church will continue to make blankets that will be delivered quarterly.
Scottish Rite Hospital holds a special place in my heart, because I became a patient at age two. I enjoy giving back to the hospital and ‘Blankets that Benefit’ is a sustainable project that will continue to provide blankets to the hospital in the future.”
